Happy Valentine’s Day, The Story of 2 Engagements

Happy Valentine’s Day, The Story of 2 Engagements

Happy Valentine’s Day, the story of two engagements.  Meeting in Dan & Elsie Tabit in a CastleSouthern Germany in the fall of 1981 on the shores of Lake Constance (Bodensee) I suspect I didn’t have a chance.  This beautiful, bright, fun and caring girl caught my heart and I fooled her long enough to marry me.

Today is not only Valentine’s Day, but 30 years ago today I ordered roses be delivered to her home, 3000 miles away from mine.  My proposal came separately via something that was called a “Mail Gram.”

When the flowers arrived, they were not roses, but Carnations.  I didn’t find this out for quite a while.  When she received the Mail Gram she thought it was from a University she had applied to, so she opened it and read it out loud to her family.  She was confused by the flowers, her mother said, “Well I knew that was coming.”  That night on the phone she said, “Tell me in person,”  so travel arrangements were quickly made for March.

Engagement PictureI count our engagement as happening on Valentines Day, Elsie considers the day I placed the ring on her finger in March.  Regardless of the day, she has been my partner in life since the day we met, and I am a better man to have her in my life.

Happy Valentine’s Day Elsie Tabit, I love you.

Dan, What a great story! We are both very lucky and blessed that we are still together with our lovely brides, 30 years later!  Congratulations to you and Elsie.

Now that is a great Valentine's Day story. You are lucky for your 30 years together. I wish you many more years together.

I've had almost 23 years together with Dan. This summer will mark 23 years for us. We did the common law thing. It was my choice. Dan picked a date and we consider that our date of marriage. We were together for several months before that. It was for family differences that I did the common law marriage. I also don't like ceremony. I'm very happy with my decision.
